For the last month i've been nedlecting the diary; just like always - i make up an idea, start working on it with a great deal of inspiration, but in a while the enthusiasm wears off and i switch to something else. So hereby i'm bringing a short summary of places and events of Dec./Jan.:
1)Leon. A cute colonial city in Nicaragua. I got there just in time to witness the celebration of La Purissima (The Immaculate Conception) - with 4m high dolls representing Holy Virgin dancing on the streets accompanied by baby Jesuses in tuxedos, with huge heads and moustaches rivaling that of L.I.Brezhnev, as well as the tradition of "griteria", or shouting, when people ram each other's doors with each other's heads and shout "Quien causa tanta alegria?"*, for which they're given the prescribed answer ("La concepcion de Maria!"^, even though "Ron!"º would be more like it) and a bag of sweets.
2)Momotombo. See earlier.
3)Granada. Another colonial town, where i attempted socializing, only to realize once again i'm so far from an average tourist enjoying the tropical sun no bridge can be built between us - not that any of us really needs it.
4)Isla de Ometepe. A beautiful island in the middle of what is said to be the biggest lake in Centro-, or even all of, America (i don't remember, and don't really care), consisting of two dormant volcanoes and an isthmus between them. I climbed one, Volcan Maderas - as usual i got no views, 5m visibility just doesn't quite make it, but saw some birds, a few capuchins, and a huge snake on the way down. I took the snake to be a boa and monkeyed with it a bit - which might have been a mistake, for later, having had a good look at a wildlife identification list, i shivered as i found fer-de-lance, pit viper, to have the same patterns...
5)San Jose. The capital of Costa Rica. Another Tel-Aviv. Lot's of urban activity. No signs of the original culture (is there any?). Unfortunately, to a large degree it applies to the whole of CR...
6)Corcovado NP. That one deserves a separate entry...
7)Volcan Arenal. Same. I already have a couple of jokes about my attempts to climb it.
The next move will be to Cerro de la Muerte - to photo-hunt down a quetzal or two.

Comments:
* - "Who's causing all this happiness?"
^ - "The Conception of Mary!"
º - "Rum!"
